Apprenticeships

Confirming our two telephone conversations

of Saturday and to-day, we are at last in a position to go ahead with the second batch of five apprentice- ships under the above scheme, and have informed the Acting Governor of Hong Kong of the recommendations on the list enclosed in your letter to Miss Ruston of the 19th March. We have also informed the Apting Governor that it may prove impossible to provide H.K. Watt with the advanced course in automobile engineering which he desires, but that you are making further enquiries and will let us know the result as soon as possible. As I told you, I understand from the Office of Miss Lake of the British Council Students. Department, that they are telegraphing to Hong Kong, stating that they are unable to award att one of their scholarships, as they have been unable to arrange the required courses.

We have also asked the Acting Governor of Hong Kong to arrange for the students finally selected to be contacted, first to confirm that they still wish to take up these apprenticeships, and second to ascertain whether any of them have in mind any particular firm or firms with whom they would prefer to receive their training. As soon as this information reaches us, we will write to you again
